The Rivers State Government has restricted every single public protest in the state “effective immediately” saying the choice was for legitimate concern for peace in the state.
Declaring the choice on Thursday, Emma Okah, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, said security organizations have been coordinated to implement the order.
The mandate was issued same day some ladies in Rivers State trooped out in challenge to request the redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) presented on the state. The ladies had taken steps to walk naked if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not redeploy the REC.
INEC had guaranteed to investigate the issue. In the interim, hours after the dissent, the Rivers State government provided a short statement that reads:
“Rivers State Government bans every single open challenge in the state with quick impact till further notice. Security offices are coordinated to uphold the request in light of a legitimate concern for open harmony and request.”
