Indonesia customs officials on Wednesday said that an American arrested for drugs possession in the holiday island of Bali could be jailed for at least five years.
The unnamed American suspect was detained at the international Bali airport after he was found to be in possession of four joints of marijuana weighing a total of 4.07 grams, after his flight from Hong Kong. He could face a maximum jail time of 15 years, Bali’s Head of Custom, Husni Syaiful said.
The handcuffed suspect was escorted by armed police to a news conference on Wednesday wearing an orange prison shirt, while police also displayed evidence of the case to the media.
Indonesia has some of the world’s strictest laws against narcotics. In May, a French national was sentenced to death for trafficking more than two kilograms of drugs in the neighboring island of Lombok.
