50 Cent’s Introduction
Named Curtis James Jackson III originally, this famous rapper, actor, TV producer, and businessman uses the name 50 Cent as his professional name. An only child, 50 Cent was raised in South Jamaica, Queens, NY.
Curtis selected his professional name in honor of a street robber by the same name because he was inspired by the man’s propensity toward survival by any means. Although he has a long list of girlfriends and two sons, 50 Cent has never been married.
After multiple arrests for drugs and illegally-owned handguns, 50 Cent devoted himself to rap music in 1999.
Early Life of 50 Cent
50 Cent was only eight years old when his mother, Sabrina Jackson, who had given birth to her son at age 15, died. After her death, he went to live with his grandmother, who simultaneously raised nine other children.
By the time he was 12 years old, he was already dealing crack cocaine on the gang-dominated streets. By age 15, he was an armed drug kingpin who was earning $150 thousand dollars a month selling illegal substances.
The rapper dropped out of high school and spent a good deal of time as a teenager under arrest and in jail. While incarcerated, he listened to his favorite rappers. When his little boy was born, he was inspired to give up drugs and follow in the footsteps of the rappers who had sustained him.

50 Cent’s Career
One of 50 Cent’s boyhood idols was the rapper Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC. In 1996, one of his friends introduced them. Jay had grown up in the same hood as 50 Cent and recognized his talent.
The Run-DMC member began to work with the young rapper to teach him the ins and outs of the genre. The following year, Jam Master Jay signed a contract with 50 Cent, which was a production agreement.
50 Cent began to flourish. He was independently releasing music without a contract from any major record company. When his popularity grew, big labels began to recruit him.
In 1999, he signed a contract with Columbia Records that resulted in a $65,000 advance. He was obligated to give Jam Master Jay $50,000 of it and to pay his entertainment lawyer the remaining portion, which left him with no money.
Things did not progress with Columbia as well as 50 Cent had hoped, so he ended up cutting his own record to get their attention.
In 2002, 50 Cent’s time as a drug dealer began to catch up with him. While sitting in a car one day, another car pulled up beside him and shot him nine times.
Although seriously injured, he survived, but Columbia thought he was too big a risk and dropped him from the label. Shortly thereafter, however, 50 wrote Wanksta, which was the key to real fame and fortune.
50 Cent presented Eminem’s manager with that song and a few others and was immediately asked to sign with the same label that represented Eminem, Shady/Aftermath, and was given a million dollars. That was the beginning of a robust career for the rapper, who increased in popularity exponentially.
