In 2002, Miranda wanted to revise the show “In The Heights” and present it on stage. With the help of Thomas Kail, an experienced theater director, he tweaked the show and debuted it on The Great White Way in 2008. Miranda not only wrote the script but also performed as “Usnavi,” the show’s protagonist. In 2008, Universal acquired the rights to “In The Heights” and decided to develop it into a movie. It was set to be released in 2011, but due to various reasons, the project didn’t move forward. Fast forward to 2018, Warner Bros bought the show for $50 million and announced it would be released in June 2020. Due to Covid-19, the show’s release date was delayed to June 11, 2021. The show gained massive success, and people loved it so much that they bought lottery tickets just to have a chance to watch it. The musical was written solely by Miranda, which is why he received a 7% cut from the show’s box office gross before it recouped and 7.5% forever after that.

The movie won him a Tony for ‘Best Musical’ in addition to many other awards. The musical made him approximately $160,000 per week! Disney reportedly bought the rights to “Hamilton” in 2021 for $75 million.

Outside the theater and producing world, Miranda also writes music for other picture motions. He has a long-term relationship with Disney. In 2014, he helped provide music for the movie “Moana.” The following year, he contributed a song for a scene in Cantana for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” In 2019, he again wrote a piece for Star Wars, followed by various more contributions to different Disney titles.
